You begin learning from Shaman the ways of the spirit world

Shaman is teaching you. The one selected student. To take his place when he dies. To keep the ancient knowledge alive. It is a hard study to do. A lot of your learning more resembles chores. Soon you will be taking the root the way Shaman does. He boils pounded roots for hours with any sacred redcaps of the holy mushroom he has laying about. He says the connection to the spirit world is much stronger as a warm drink.
