The Spartan death trial. No boy can go to school without the rope ordeal. Lowered down a deep shaft on a thick and knotted rope. Jeering kids watch from above chanting "Fall! fall fall!". Below is a pink gurgling pool of corrosive acid. Reduces the boys that fall to bone. Sweet wisps of steam rising from the pit. The rich kids get to spit, taunt, and throw rocks at the other boys many boys die this way. Some of them even smuggle in balloons filled with motor oil to throw and burst onto the rope so that the hands slip in the oily mess. One out of five boys die in this trial but if you cannot do it you are not considered strong enough to live.
The second trail of Manhood is Beat. You must beat up another boy within 3 years of your age. This trial is normally overcome in the first year or two of school. The weakest and or most submissive boys become targets for the others boys. So many share the same beat medal from beating down the same boy. Sometimes for beating down the same boy some other boy has just finished beating.
