A harsh winter's war
It's so cold in Uglavaria that they burn their dead to stay warm. Strange and toxic chemical fires burn in rusted-out oil drums all over the country, and the people crowd in for a little warmth.
You never were too healthy in cold times. You tend to get colds and worse. This year you get walking pneumonia, and you are in a hospital cot in the same unit you do surgery in. Your fellow drafted docs are working to get you back to health. Always sleeping, you keep having nightmares about kill bots raiding the camp, tearing everyone apart, and you being helpless to stop it. Just watching the horror unfold... over and over again...
While laid out sick your favorite nurse, Becky Thurmickle, is transferred to a different unit. You thought about marrying that girl. You hear the news two months later that she and her whole unit were ripped apart by kill bots.
