Tobacco is an herb of Mars and the primary cause of death for people who smoke any amount of it. To smoke is to pledge your willingness to die in the service of smoking.
To smoke in the modern day is to knowingly choose the tobacco ordeal. You may pledge your death, or submit to the ordeal of quitting. Both paths are terrible trials but you are given the choice of which to take.
And you never know, something else might always kill you first.
